Water – our element

A paper mill is built on water – and at Perlen Papier water is one of the most important resources. It plays a central role in the material cycle and in paper production. The water used in production is treated to the highest quality standards and returned to the natural cycle.

Water from our own springs

Water is our most valuable asset: we are aware of its value and use it as sparingly as possible. The water that flows on the Perlen site comes from our own sources.

Our wastewater treatment plant: the largest in the canton of Lucerne

Every day for a clean Reuss

The industrial wastewater from our production facilities flows into our wastewater treatment plant. In the largest industrial wastewater treatment plant in the canton of Lucerne, 22,000 m³ of wastewater is cleaned every day and then returned to the Reuss – the equivalent of 137,500 bathtubs that are treated every day.

Multi-stage preparation process

In our multi-stage treatment plant, the water undergoes both mechanical and various biological purification processes. We ensure that the water quality meets the highest standards before the purified water is returned to the Reuss. Cooperation with the Canton of Lucerne’s Environment and Energy Department guarantees that the strict legal requirements are met at all times.

A bird’s eye view of the wastewater treatment plant: the water passes through multi-stage purification processes.

The water cycle

The treated water flows back into the factory canal, from where it is fed back into the natural cycle of the Reuss. This sustainable use of water is not just a duty for us, but a central element of our ecological responsibility.
