Energy – efficient solutions for sustainable papers

The production of paper requires energy – this is unavoidable. At Perlen Papier we do everything we can to use our energy as efficiently as possible and draw on sustainable sources. Thanks to our own power plants and modern technologies, we can significantly reduce our carbon footprint and set standards in the industry.

Our mission: minimal emissions

Since 2013, we have reduced our greenhouse gas emissions by an impressive 88%. This corresponds to a 76% smaller carbon footprint compared to the industry average from the Confederation of the European Paper Industry (Cepi). This success is the result of our consistent efforts to replace fossil fuels and use renewable energy.

Steam from the neighbor Renergia

The majority of the The steam required for drying the paper webs is obtained from the neighboring Renergia waste incineration plant. This steam is a waste product of waste incineration and is used efficiently by us. We cover the remaining demand via our own biomass power plant, the boiler house and the TMP plant.

In the past, crude oil was used for steam production – today we rely on more environmentally friendly solutions. This is a significant step in our mission to reduce our carbon footprint and position ourselves as a leader in the industry.

Own electricity production

We cover part of our energy requirements with our own power plants. Our machines are supplied with sustainable electricity generated in our biomass power plant and our two hydropower plants. The electricity we produce corresponds to the consumption of around 6,700 Swiss households. The rest is purchased from the Swiss electricity market.
